FAQs
Vision: to help improve the quality and quantity of Arabica coffee from Uganda.
Mission: to share good agricultural practices (GAPs) to improve the quality and quantity of Arabica coffee and thus earnings and livelihoods of Arabica coffee farmers in Uganda.
Who we are: Shimta3 Marare Arabica Coffee Farm (SMACF) is an Arabica coffee and banana farm in Manafwa, Eastern Uganda
What do we do: SMACF produces and aggregates coffee and then processes to green bean for sale to exporters. SMACF is exploring production of banana crisps, banana wine, mead and other honey products to augment income. Our target is to work with 4,000 farmers thus impacting 28,000 people within 10 years.
Why do we do what we do: The government of Uganda is targeting production of 20 million bags of coffee per year from 2025 to 2030. The global demand for coffee is 151 million bags yet production is 148 million bags leaving a shortfall of 3 million bags1. In addition, global demand is growing by 4.5% per annum2. Currently both the quality and quantity of Arabica coffee in Uganda is lower than optimum leading to lost revenue for the farmers, the industry and Uganda3.
How we do it: In order to guarantee sufficient, quality product, SMACF employs agronomists to train and guide the out growers on how to improve their quality and yield. SMACF then purchases quality ripe, red cherries to process into parchment. Thereafter, SMACF works with a huller to process the parchment to green bean for sale to exporters. This entire process guarantees quality Arabica coffee green bean which fetches a premium price, thus allowing SMF to pay the out growers a premium price.
Going forward SMF has embarked on plans to process banana wine and mead thus adding more value to the banana and honey products. We are also looking forward to commencing a partnership to produce fiber from the waste banana stems. All these will enable us to improve our financial performance and thus enable us pay our workers and out growers competitive rates.
When did we start operations: SMACF was incorporated in November 2019. Prior to that we started operations in September 2017.
Where are we located: SMACF is in Bumatoola I, Bunangabo, Khabutoola, Manafwa District, Uganda.
